What creating a case study taught me

Insight

I'm currently creating a case study for a project I just wrapped with Cascade Designs, and the process has been eye-opening.

Not because of what I delivered, but because of what I learned creating it.

Documenting every challenge, solution, and decision along the way has shown me how much valuable insight gets lost when you don't take the time to capture it.

Most of us finish a project and immediately move on to the next one. We might make a quick mental note about what went well or what we'd do differently, but we don't actually document our process.

It's a missed opportunity.

When you document your projects thoroughly, three things happen:

First, you identify friction points in your workflow and can smooth them out for future projects.

Second, you're able to articulate the real value you provide. Businesses care about business results, not just creative execution. When you can clearly show the problems you solved and the impact you created, you demonstrate ROI and build credibility.

Third, you give potential clients confidence knowing you have a clear process to get them from point A to point B.

Your work is more valuable than you think. But if you can't articulate why, neither can your clients.

Resource

Loom

The simplest way to document processes and create instructional videos.

I use Loom when I need to send instructions or explain workflows to clients and team members. Plus, if it's something I often have to explain, it saves me time from saying the same thing over and over

Action Step

This week, create a project case study for one of your recent projects. Ideally one similar to the type of work you want to get hired for.

Answer these questions:

  • Crew + roles: Who did what on this project?
  • Project goal: What was the client trying to achieve?
  • Problem solved: What specific challenge did this project address?
  • Process: What was your step by step workflow? Did you encounter any problems along the way? If so, how did you overcome them?
  • Solution/results: What did you deliver and what was the impact?

This works for spec work or paid projects. The goal is to understand and articulate the value you created beyond just the creative output.

Once you have this documented, you'll be surprised how much clearer you'll be able to explain what you do.

Until next week,
Cobi

Intentional Insights August 26th, 2025 Insight Last week's shoot had us sleeping in some pretty crazy spots. Them-a-Rest Fast and Light Production We could point the camera in any direction and still get great shots. I just finished clipping the footage this morning and it reminded me that the best way to get better footage isn't the camera, isn't the lens, or even that fancy new piece of gear or camera technique... It's the location. Over the years I've been on a ton of shoots where we are...

Intentional Insights August 12th, 2025 Insight The last few weeks have been go-go-go, work, moving into a new house, pushing my climbing harder than ever, and trying to make content in between. I was feeling it physically and mentally. My body was beat up and the motivation to GSD (get sh*t done) was low. I was just barely getting the basics done to keep things rolling. But, over this past weekend I fully recharged. My brother got married in Florida, and I took that as an opportunity to...
