The truth about courses, mentors, and building your own path

Insight

I’ve taken a lot of courses and joined a few mentorships over the years.

And my biggest takeaway?

There’s no perfect solution.

No matter how dialed someone else’s process is, you can’t just copy it exactly and expect the same results.

We all have different strengths, weaknesses, and experiences.

What worked for them might not work for you.

That's okay.

It doesn't mean it was a waste.

It just means you need to adapt it to your situation.

Build something that works for you.

Something that fits your lifestyle (or the one you're striving toward), your personality, your goals, the way you think.

That doesn’t mean avoiding hard things or staying in your comfort zone.

It means test things out.

Keep what resonates.

and ditch the rest.

I haven't found the perfect solution from any course, mentorship, or training, but I have taken something valuable away from every single one.

Sometimes it’s a process that becomes essential to my workflow.

Other times, it’s something I want to actively avoid.

Either way, I've learned something valuable.

Keep what sticks, ditch the rest, and create something that works for you.

Resource

Canva

Graphic design made simple.

Even though I pay for the full Adobe suite, I still use Canva as my go-to tool to build pitches, proposals, and PDFs.

I've found it more intuitive to use than most Adobe programs, and because I'm not a professional graphic designer, ease of use is crucial.

It's cloud-based, and I've loaded all my brand assets (like logos, fonts, and colors) in there, so I can edit from any device at any time.

Overall it's just an easier workflow and I highly recommend it.

Action Step

Dial in your process to work for you.

Think about one process, strategy, or tool you're currently using that feels clunky or unnatural.

Then ask yourself:

  • Am I doing this just because someone told me I should?
  • Does this actually help me move forward?
  • Can I simplify or replace it with something that fits better?

Test an adjustment this week. (Does it work better? worse? same?)

Build your system to fit you.

Until next week,
Cobi

Intentional Insights August 26th, 2025 Insight Last week's shoot had us sleeping in some pretty crazy spots. Them-a-Rest Fast and Light Production We could point the camera in any direction and still get great shots. I just finished clipping the footage this morning and it reminded me that the best way to get better footage isn't the camera, isn't the lens, or even that fancy new piece of gear or camera technique... It's the location. Over the years I've been on a ton of shoots where we are...

Intentional Insights August 12th, 2025 Insight The last few weeks have been go-go-go, work, moving into a new house, pushing my climbing harder than ever, and trying to make content in between. I was feeling it physically and mentally. My body was beat up and the motivation to GSD (get sh*t done) was low. I was just barely getting the basics done to keep things rolling. But, over this past weekend I fully recharged. My brother got married in Florida, and I took that as an opportunity to...
